Ο πλανήτης Ποσειδώνας ανακαλύφθηκε από τον Γερμανό αστρονόμο Johann Gottfried Galle, βασισμένος σε μαθηματικές προβλέψεις των Urbain Le Verrier και John Couch Adams. Ήταν η πρώτη φορά που ένας πλανήτης εντοπίστηκε μέσω μαθηματικών υπολογισμών πριν από την παρατήρησή του, σηματοδοτώντας μια τεράστια επιτυχία για τη θεωρητική αστρονομία.
