Ο Charles Darwin και ο Alfred Russel Wallace παρουσίασαν από κοινού την ιδέα της φυσικής επιλογής στην Εταιρεία Λινναίου του Λονδίνου (1 Ιουλίου 1858), με τη δημοσίευση να ακολουθεί τον Αύγουστο, αν και η πλήρης δημοσίευση του έργου «Περί της Καταγωγής των Ειδών» ήρθε αργότερα. Η εργασία του Ιουλίου 1859 έθεσε τα θεμέλια για τη σύγχρονη εξελικτική βιολογία.
