Ο Alexander Fleming παρατήρησε ότι ένα είδος μούχλας (Penicillium) σε μια πλάκα καλλιέργειας στο εργαστήριό του είχε παράγει μια ουσία που σκότωνε τα βακτήρια. Αυτή η τυχαία ανακάλυψη οδήγησε στην ανάπτυξη της πενικιλίνης, του πρώτου αντιβιοτικού, που άλλαξε την ιατρική.
